Getting your home ready to sell in 7 steps
Why presentation makes the difference
A home's first impression is made online, well before anyone sees the front door. Buyers scroll through dozens of listings; your photos decide whether they keep looking or click away. A home that looks well cared for and bright attracts more viewings - and more viewings more often lead to a good offer. It therefore pays to invest time in the presentation beforehand.
1. Declutter and depersonalise
Clear away personal items, excess furniture and full cupboards. A buyer wants to picture their own life in the home, and that works better in a neutral, tidy space. Fewer belongings also lets the square metres speak for themselves.
2. Small maintenance first
A sticking door, a dripping tap or a loose skirting board are small things, but they give buyers the feeling of deferred maintenance. Walk through the home with a critical eye and fix the small defects before the photographer arrives.
3. Light, light, light
Open the curtains, replace broken bulbs and choose warm-white light. A bright home looks bigger and more inviting. Preferably plan the photo shoot for a day with soft daylight.
